This musical has a total of 22 songs as accompanied by a set of six musicians evoking an organic jam session. Here’s a selection from the first act.
Gibraltar Lane
Gibraltar Lane: A Jamaican Odyssey is a narrative podcast that follows the anecdotes and adventures of a girl growing up in 1960s Kingston, Jamaica.
Inspired by the stories of my mother’s childhood, I crafted an original score that incorporated sweeping themes with tropical influences. Here’s a selection of some of the pieces from this limited series.
Black Music Exploration
In the wake of the 2020 uprising, I was inspired to create educational and enlightening songs about the Black experience. These were shared weekly with the aim to keep the momentum of Black Lives Matter as we entered into our historic June.
These songs not only lyrically, but also musically explore Blackness. I delved into pain of blues, the rhythm of folk, and the triumph of marching bands that were born from and adopted into Black culture.
Hey there, I’m Charlie Malcolm. I’m a creative living and working in LA.
As a born and bred Floridian, it goes without saying that I’ve witnessed some bizarre and borderline absurd happenings in my home state, but the mix of Caribbean, Latinx, and Southern culture is one of a kind and it helped shaped my unique perspective of being able to tell stories from all sides. On top of that, as the gay son of a Black Jamaican mother and a Southern white American dad, I find walking the line of cultural divide is my happy place.
The stories I tell explore themes of intersectionality, often from dueling perspectives. I believe that it’s in the gray areas of uncertainty and doubt that we can engage with audiences to explore questions they don’t often dwell on.
I got my start in the entertainment industry as a stagehand at a professional theatre where I fell in love with how lighting a black box could manifest an entire world. I later attended Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture Arts for a Master’s in Film Production. I focused on cinematography and moved to LA where I worked on several short films, music videos, and promos. I went on to become one of three ACE Student Eddie Nominees which opened doors in the world of editing.
I am currently freelance working as an editor on various projects.
